THE LATEST NEWS

NEWS & VIEWS FROM THE MM TEAM

Hello, and welcome to our monthly newsletter to update you on everything Menopause Mandate. A warm welcome to anyone that has just joined us; we’re a group campaigning for better menopause support all around.

As always there has been a lot going on.

We are taking the Menopause Mandate Adviceline in partnership with Holland & Barrett to the next level. In addition, Holland & Barrett has launched their Every Menopause Matters campaign to ensure that everybody gets the advice and support they need, regardless of race and background.

Alice’s column this month features the vital topic of how to down in hot (flush) weather.

Our Q&A is with MM Adviceline nurse Victoria Howell and she joins us to explain why she finds her job so rewarding.

Emma Bunton was recently in the news about her menopause and how it has affected her libido. An issue to which many menopausal women can relate.

We have a very important save the date for October!

And finally, women's health expert, documentary maker, and author of books, Kate Muir, has given us some very wise words about last week’s HRT and dementia headlines. Don’t panic....

Plus, don’t forget we have an update from our friends at Let's all Talk Menopause discussing this week's featured topic in their webinar series. Let’s All Talk Menopause is our sister site, which runs invaluable weekly interviews with specialists and experts surrounding all things peri and menopause. Their catalogue of interviews is there to be viewed again, and we are delighted to tell you that all MM followers get 20% off a full access pass. This means vital information and education is right at your fingertips from the comfort of your home.

THIS MONTH’S Q&A…

Victoria Howell – Menopause Nurse for The MM Advice Line

Victoria Howell – Menopause Nurse for The MM Advice Line

Nurse Victoria has the important role of advising callers on their menopause symptoms, listening to their questions, and guiding them on how to find help. Here, she tells us why she’s passionate about supporting women during this transition.

  1. Being a Menopause Advice Nurse, you handle many calls. What made you decide that being a nurse was the career choice for you?

From a very young age, I had the desire to improve women’s health with exercise and nutrition, and landed my first job from college as a fitness instructon. I loved this role,  but at the time back, in the early 1990s there was no scope for career progression, and I have always been driven to achieve. My journey into being a menopause nurse was because I recognised that so many women were struggling to find the right support and education. I funded my own menopause training with the British Menopause Society, Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Primary Care Women’s Health Forum.

  1. Which menopause symptoms or issues are you most faced with, and any that have truly baffled you?

If you were to ask the general public on the street about menopause, the answers would highly likely be hot flushes and the cessation of periods, something that happens to “older” women. Anxiety is one menopause symptom that I see every time I am in clinic. Other common symptoms include extreme fatigue, sleeping difficulties, joint pain and brain fog. There are lesser-known symptoms such as a very dry or burning tongue, dry eyes (where in fact eyes actually water) and restless legs.

  1. How do you advise a caller that is desperate and feels they have nowhere else to turn?

It is essential that the caller feels listened to and understood, so it’s very important for them to be able to share how they are feeling and voice their main concerns. I share evidence-based information, tools and resources that can help them, and talk them through how to use these, giving examples. People report they feel like a weight is lifted when they realise it is not just them feeling a particular way. I also remind the caller that they can book further 15-minute sessions if they would like to talk further.

  1. What is your one piece of advice that you would give to anyone who is suffering with their symptoms.

You will get through this; menopause is a transitional time in an individual’s life and you will emerge on the other side. There is so much information out there about menopause, and there are many people out there calling themselves menopause experts. As a registered professional myself I do find this alarming. I always advise people to check the source of the information is evidence-based research such as the Women’s Health Concern.

To make an appointment with one of our nurses, please visit www.menopausemandate.com and click on support. We offer a free nurse video consultation service for those seeking information and advice about the menopause. There is strength in sharing, and help is just a few clicks away.

They’re offering every woman personalised support via a free 1-2-1 consultation with a trained menopause advisor. These can be booked in store or by clicking here. STAYING COOL IN HOT (FLUSH) WEATHER…

ALICE SMELLIE SAYS:

I am very grateful that I've never experienced the hot flushes that affect around 75% of peri and menopausal women. I am certainly warmer than I used to be, but that's nothing compared to the sensation of being dipped in a volcano. What’s more, the discomfort of hot flushes is exacerbated by warm weather. With one heatwave behind us and a predicted four more sweeping in, I think we're all wondering how to stay cool in July and August.

'Firstly, if you are struggling generally, please see your doctor as there are hormonal and non-hormonal medications available to treat hot flushes and sweats,' says GP and author of The M Word, Dr Phillipa Kaye.

'When you are already hot and the temperature is rising, a hot flush may feel even worse,' she says. Don't forget general lifestyle tips such as doing exercise, avoiding alcohol, caffeine, spicy foods and smoking. 'My favourite tip for a hot summer night is to use a cooling gel insert in your pillowcase so you lay your hot cheek on a cool surface.'

Thank you to the members of MM and also the MHDG Facebook group, to whom I turned for further advice...some of which was highly amusing.

One MM member suggested Dock and Bay Ice Cold Cooling Towels, £18, dockandbay, com; drench in icy water, and the evaporating cooling effect from the specially designed fabric lasts for up to six hours.

Or - and I think we could all guess this - there's the free (though less funky) option - of a cotton pillowcase soaked in cold water, wrung out and laid flat on the body when on your bed. 'Ideally you're also lying by a floor-standing fan,' says Insta friend Sarah. She also recommends a portable neck fan, £14.99 from Amazon. Again, icy water on wet fabric will have the same sort of effect, but how cool (pun intended!) is that?!

One of the excellent MHDG members suggests a water mist spray fan. The words 'life-saving' were used about the cooling powers - and they are very inexpensive – often under £3. Cooling mists are ten a penny (not literally, more's the pity) but one that's always highly rated is the Avène Thermal Spring Water, Spray for Sensitive Skin, £4.31, lookfantastic.com which is cooling, soothing and also suitable for sunburn.

A cool shower's another obvious thing to do, but I'm also a big fan of  Whoosh Shower Jelly, from £6.50, lush.com - a blue jelly that can be chilled or frozen and then applied to hot skin for an instantly icy effect. Or try peppermint soap - menthol activates the cold sensitive receptors in the skin, and Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Liquid Castile Soap, £2.69, will help you feel the freeze.

My absolute favourite comes from the member of MHDG who says that she has a pet cooling mat under her desk at work. When the dogs have moved off it, she pops her hot feet on. Thank you all so much! We’d love to hear any further suggestions.

BEAUTIFUL BLUSHES: Congratulations to the lovely Dr Ateh Jewel, MM advocate, broadcaster, journalist and diversity expert. Her Ateh Jewel Beauty Blush of Dreams launches on July 5 at Harrods. 'I created Ateh Jewel Beauty as a love letter to my broken heart and the feeling of being invisible for so many years within the beauty industry,' says Ateh. 'The pigment-packed blushes show up on my deeper skin tone and pop on all skin tones. As we get older, switching to dewy, glossy and glow-enhancing products help you feel confident and vibrant.' £25, atehjewelbeauty.com

Scary stuff. But not exactly true

Women's health expert, documentary maker and author KATE MUIR SAYS:

'What a singularly unhelpful headline we saw in one of our most respected newspapers. 'Women on HRT more likely to have dementia, study suggests,' was the thundering topic of discussion amongst - I'd suggest - not just the two million women currently taking HRT, but those considering it, and those who are against it.

Danish scientists surveyed the records of 61,000 women with an average age of 70, including 5,589 who had been diagnosed with dementia. They found women who had taken HRT (after the age of 45) were 24 per cent more likely to get dementia or Alzheimer’s disease than women of the same age and background who did not use the treatment.

Scary stuff. But not exactly true. Are we seeking a repeat of the WHI report of 2002 when headlines led millions of women to stop taking HRT?

First, 90 % of the women in this study were on synthetic and not transdermal HRT. In a far larger study, transdermal HRT has been shown to reduce dementia risk by 74%.

We need to get women off the old HRT with synthetic progestins (which also have the small breast cancer risk) and onto the new stuff.

The problem is that there's still a shortage of Utrogestan – body identical progesterone - so it's not being made easy.

Secondly - and there was another piece in the same newspaper suggesting that we don't panic - it was an observational study, so there are a lot of other variables that can't be taken into account.

I very much hope that women read this story with the cynicism it deserves. Don't forget that HRT has proven benefits for the heart and bones, and I'd wager that in the next few years, the lessening of dementia risk will be incontrovertibly proven.

What the study actually proves beyond reasonable doubt is that more research is needed into HRT, and it's appalling that this hasn't already been done.

“Fading desire is a big, big shock for a woman.”…

Former Spice Girl Emma Bunton recently gave an interview to The Times about how she and her partner of 24 years, Jade Jones navigated her menopause journey. She says: “My desire, my libido, whatever you want to call it, it went and that really worried me.” In addition to a lack of sexual desire, Bunton struggled with other menopause symptoms such as brain fog, and anxiety. In order to manage her symptoms, Bunton decided on HRT and found herself feeling like her again. To read the full article click here.

We’d like to thank Emma. Keeping the conversation going is essential in educating and raising awareness, so women know what to expect and where to find support.

Alice Smellie ponders the ever-changing process of menopause.

I've been reading a lot about strange menopause symptoms over the last few weeks - in large part thanks to MM members posting on social media! One of the weirdest that I experienced was itchy inner ears in my late forties (which now seems so young), and a friend once told me that she had months of swollen eyes. Other unexpected symptoms include burning mouth, dry skin and altered spatial awareness, not to mention the fact that perimenopause often kicks off with anxiety or sleep struggles, which can easily be attributed to life stress.

The Chair of MM, Mariella Frostrup, and I recently compiled a newspaper feature with Dr Tonye Wokoma, who is one of the MM experts, that listed 50 symptoms, and this list seems to be getting longer by the day!

What's also fascinating is the way in which peri and menopause symptoms change as hormone levels fluctuate and fall. For over a year, I've had such bad all over body aching for a few days every month that I kept thinking I had flu or Covid. Finally, (and this is where symptom trackers are so useful, not that I'm organised enough to use one) I realised that it was entirely cyclical. In the same way, two years ago I took Utrogestan - and it gave me horrendous mood swings. I tried it again for sleep (I have the Mirena IUD for progesterone) in January, and it's incredible.

'Oestrogen and progesterone don't go down in a steady fashion, and it's worth being aware that different symptoms might manifest, and others increase or decrease in intensity,' says Dr Tonye Wokoma, consultant in community gynaecology, sexual and reproductive health, in Hull.

'That's why it's important to be aware of possible symptoms (remember that not everything is menopause!) and have regular HRT reviews with your GP if you’re on it - you might need to alter your dose.'

And think of menopause as a holistic process. 'The answer isn't always oestrogen replacement. Remember that the menopause experience can be impacted by lifestyle and stress,' reminds Dr Wokoma.

As an aside, good luck getting hold of Utrogestan with the on-going, oft denied and now official shortages. You don't need to be a menopause expert to know that the rage felt about this is nothing to do with hormones and everything to do with frustration at the lack of priority given to women's health...

DANCE IT OUT

For the frustrated and failed prima ballerinas amongst us - my mother told me aged 8 that she didn't think I'd ever dance Odette/Odile (still heart-broken!) - ballet is a fantastic hobby, and now you can do it from the privacy of your own home.

Sarah Aspinall - ballet teacher and founder of BreakingBallet.com says: 'Ballet-inspired movement helps improve posture, flexibility and balance. It also increases muscle mass and strength and it's weight bearing, so good for bone density. In addition, there are psychological benefits, including mood boosting and preventing cognitive decline. Ballet is a great form of exercise for any stage of menopause.'

Also - and I can testify to this - the movements are sheer joy and it's a great way to achieve long, lean muscles (which I don't have. Yet).

breakingballet.com offers a wide variety of short and effective ballet workouts to tone, strengthen and fine-tune every part of your body. Sarah is offering MM members 20% discount on the annual BBackstage membership (usually £225)  https://breakingballet.com/BBackstageMM and the Coupon Code for ANNUAL ONLY is MENOPAUSEMANDATE20

(If you have any medical conditions, do check with a health professional before doing these exercises)

Celebrating our 1st Birthday!

25th April 2023, Houses of Parliament

Menopause Mandate patrons, advocates, experts and supporters headed back to The Houses of Parliament to celebrate one year of hard-fought wins and lobbying and to share all the latest news and updates.

Here is all the info from the day…

This time last year we had our inaugural gathering at the Houses of Parliament. Since then, we’ve gained thousands of supporters, launched a hotline, published a book and held a rally, as well as communicating widely on telly, radio, in the press and on social media about menopause.

Our Menopause Mix: Hot 100 is available on Spotify. It’s a brilliant playlist that reads as a story, and can be found here. Please read and share for a fun way to drive more understanding and awareness of menopause symptoms.

In wider news, and thanks to all the campaigners out there, there’s huge cause for celebration. The April 1st launch of the HRT Prescription Prepayment Certificate (PPC) means that women can receive a year’s worth of HRT for the cost of just two prescriptions (£19.30).

The menopause space has expanded enormously in the last few years, and Menopause Mandate is thrilled to be a part of this. But there’s no question of us halting our efforts.

SHORT FILMS FOR HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS

In partnership with Theramex, we’ve made a series of 12 short films directed at healthcare professionals, featuring pharmacist Thorrun Govind, and British Menopause Society accredited menopause specialist and trainer Dr Juliet Balfour, who runs an NHS menopause clinic.

These are free for all GPs, pharmacists and their teams. Subjects covered include the diagnosis of perimenopause and menopause, the correct prescribing of HRT, the truth about testosterone, how the HRT PPC works, advice for those with breast cancer, and what lifestyle advice can be offered.

Theramex has had no involvement in the content of these films, and all recommendations follow British Menopause Society guidelines.

MENSTRUAL AND MENOPAUSAL HEALTH IN THE WORKPLACE STANDARD

With research from the Fawcett Society suggesting that one in ten working menopausal women is considering leaving employment because of symptoms, but no official menopause policy in place, we’re thrilled that British Standards Institution (BSI), which is responsible for publishing national guidelines to aid UK organisations, is launching BS 30416, Menstruation, Menstrual Health and Menopause in the Workplace – Guide this spring. We have an exclusive preview of this today.

The standard can be used as a toolkit for organisations to build a menstrual health and menopause-inclusive work environment. It will benefit employees, by providing adjustments and creating a supportive open culture, and also employers, by improving the engagement of staff and reducing the loss of staff and associated costs.

BSI sees this as an opportunity to kickstart change, to break through taboos in the workplace and to generate a more inclusive and compassionate work environment.

Carolyn Harris, MP, says:

When I think back to this last time last year and remember the anger and frustration felt by so many of us, I feel a real sense of pride at how far we have come. On Menopause Mandate’s first birthday we are celebrating the achievements of everyone who has joined us on our mission to get better access to menopause support and treatment for all.

We are seeing real progress but there is still a lot more to do, and I am excited to see what we will be celebrating this time next year.

Mariella shared even more news…

“As always, thank you to our patrons, experts, advocates, and sponsors, as well as all those supporting Menopause Mandate. I am thrilled to announce that radio DJ and presenter Jo Whiley, and author and scriptwriter Emma Kennedy, are joining us as patrons.

And - hot off the press (this news literally came in overnight), I’m over the moon to confirm that Menopause Mandate is heading to the States and I am further delighted to announce that our Chair stateside will be  - please all enjoy an in-head drum roll - award-winning actor, producer, activist, and Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Stripes - Naomi Watts. We are thrilled to be joined by such an inspiring woman. Watch this space.”

MARCH NEWSLETTER

Hello from The Menopause Mandate Team!

In case you’ve only recently discovered us, we are a group with a common goal: to improve and revolutionise the support and advice women receive on perimenopause and menopause, from both health professionals and the wider society.

The MM campaign is going from strength to strength, and April looks set to be an exciting month. Birthday celebrations are looming, as Menopause Mandate turns one. The HRT prepayment certificate launched on the 1st  April, so for the cost of two prescription charges you have twelve months’ worth of oestrogen and progesterone.  And we have an exciting musical announcement to celebrate…

In this month’s column, writer and health journalist Alice Smellie explores the topic of Spring skin and pigmentation problems during menopause – an issue that affects many of us during midlife years.

A panel of campaigners were invited to meet with the Women and Equalities Committee to discuss menopause in the workplace, and MM had some fantastic representation at the event.

Over at Let’s All Talk Menopause there are invaluable weekly interviews running with specialists and experts,  and on the subject of all things peri and menopause. Their extensive catalogue of talks is available on-demand - and it’s good news for all MM followers, as you can get 20% off a full access pass. Valuable, expert and easy to access information at your fingertips!

And definitely scroll down to our powerful MM supporter story. Kathleen Wilson from Glenboig, Scotland, gives her account of struggling to get the support she needed during menopause. Her story is the reason behind our continuing work. There’s a long way to go, and until every woman gets the help and advice necessary, we’ll continue to campaign.

The Menopause Mix: Hot 100

A playlist that reads like a story!

Menopause Mandate is already dancing with joy at the introduction of the HRT Prepayment Certificate. Launched on 1st April 2023, this means that women can have a year’s worth of HRT for the price of just two prescription charges. To celebrate, we are launching a Spotify playlist: The Menopause Mix: Hot 100, that will run throughout the month of April.

The Menopause Mix: Hot 100 is an eclectic Spotify playlist of 100 song titles, including hits by Rod Stewart, Peter Gabriel, Adele, The Spice Girls and Jay-Z. Some you'll know, some are more...unusual. And when you read the 100 titles in order, the whole thing adds up to a clever and hilarious narrative of the 30+ symptoms.

You can download here – and read it like a story – its ACE!

A YEAR OF MM

We’re so proud of what we have achieved in the space of just a year, and there’s so much more to come. We aim to help more women as well as celebrating everything that we’ve accomplished so far. With that in mind, the team at Menopause Mandate are headed back to the Houses of Parliament to keep piling on the pressure and share some birthday cake with MPs.  We will share more in our next newsletter.

CAMPAIGNING AT THE HOUSE OF COMMONS

Women and Equalities Committee

On March 22nd, Chair of MM, Mariella Frostrup, patron Carol Vorderman, founder of Menopause Whilst Black, Karen Arthur, and documentary maker and author Kate Muir, went to the House of Commons to speak with the Women and Equalities Committee about the government's response to their menopause and workplace recommendations. It made for a gripping discussion with committee members from both parties.

CAN YOU GET YOUR HRT?

HRT shortages

Although there isn’t an SSP (Serious Shortage Protocol) on Utrogestan, shortages still appear to be an issue. Please get in touch with us via Instagram or email if you have any thoughts to add or are struggling.

ALICE’S COLUMN

Spring skin - pigmentation problems

April is the month during which I start to wear high-factor SPF on my face at all times (I wear at least all year round). This is to the absolute howling mirth of some of my friends (who will be sorry soon enough), when I turn up for 8am morning runs slathered in SPF50+. But I am right, and they are wrong.

You see, another side-effect of peri and menopause is that skin is more prone to pigmentation. This is in part because the sun damage that we accrued in our twenties starts to show itself. NOW I regret sunbathing covered in olive oil and lying on baking foil to, 'intensify the rays'.

Pigmentation and, of course, wrinkles, also develop because of the ageing process. 'The skin's natural barrier function becomes less efficient as we age', consultant dermatologist (and Menopause Mandate advocate) Dr Anjali Mahto tells me. 'This means that we lose water, and skin becomes more vulnerable to pollution and to the effects of the sun'.

But...(there's always a 'but' with peri and menopause!) when hormones fluctuate and decrease, skin becomes thinner, hyaluronic acid production slows, and you might notice increased sensitivity. 'If you suffered from melasma in pregnancy, you might find that this reactivates', says Dr Mahto.

Collagen, which is responsible for youthful plumpness, depletes at around one per cent a year from your mid-twenties. But during the five years postmenopause, levels can plummet by as much as 30 per cent.

This all sounds rather depressing, but don't forget you are also enjoying (hopefully) the renewed confidence of midlife.

Besides, there's plenty you can do, and there's no need to break the bank. Most experts recommend using three basics. 'SPF is vital to protect skin from ageing and - most importantly - from burning, and the risk of skin cancer', says Dr Mahto. She recommends using a Vitamin C serum once a day - preferably in the morning before moisturiser and sunscreen - to brighten skin and help counteract pollution and sun damage. 'Use a product containing some form of retinol at night to improve cell turnover and skin tone, as well as collagen production'.

Don't forget that SPF is important for us all. 'Black skin is less prone to wrinkling and volume loss than white skin, but more likely to develop pigmentation in midlife', advises Dr Mahto. 'If you've never used much SPF, now is definitely the time to start, and wear it every day'.

As an aside...I have noticed that every part of the body can wrinkle, including ankles and wrists. Who knew?

WHY NOT TRY...?

Ultrasun - I highly recommend this brand - is offering Menopause Mandate members 20% off their Face Anti-Pigmentation SPF50+ (normal and tinted) and Face Fluid SPF50+. All three of these are hydrating, pigmentation-mitigating and with skincare actives. https://www.ultrasun.co.uk, code MM20.

Q+A skincare is kindly offering an additional 15% off their lovely-to-use and reasonably priced  4-piece (and 6-piece) Daily Essentials bundles, which include a Vitamin C serum and hyaluronic acid cleanser, qandaskin.com, code MM15.

MM SUPPORTER STORY

Kathleen Wilson, 57, is a housing officer. She lives in Glenboig, Scotland and is married with two children and two grandchildren. She is also a carer for her 83-year-old mother.

“I remember one day, about ten years ago, standing in the middle of a pharmacy feeling completely lost and looking at all the menopausal products, wondering whether that might be the reason for my feeling so terrible. An assistant asked whether she could help. 'No, I'm ok', I said. And then I stopped. 'Actually, I'm really not ok'. She was very helpful and recommended a magnet that is supposed to alleviate symptoms, which helped my anxiety for a time.

I'm postmenopausal now, but I look back on the last few years with dismay at how much time has been wasted going to and from unsympathetic GPs in a desperate search for solutions to my debilitating symptoms. I am now on body-identical oestrogen and the Mirena IUD, and I feel better than I have in almost a decade. But how dismal that it's taken so long, and that I've had to push and advocate for myself.

In my late forties, I felt lethargic and tired, but I went to the GP a few times and was dismissed. Eventually, he suggested depression and prescribed antidepressants. I tried them for a couple of months, but they didn't make any difference. Then I was given oral HRT, but that didn't help, and I was worried about breast cancer - the low risk wasn't explained.

Finally, three years ago, I found someone who listened. I had been tracking my symptoms and by now I had awful brain fog, was utterly irritable and felt terrible. This GP gave me oestrogen patches and the Mirena IUD. I will never look back - my daughter says that I'm a different person! But it's infuriating that it's taken years to get to this stage.”

Thank you for sharing your personal story with us Kathleen.

What else has been happening?

At last!

It's been confirmed that the one-off prescription charge for HRT will be in place in England from the first of April.

To everyone who has campaigned and supported and signed our petition, congratulations!

This is a huge step. Women can now access HRT every month without having to pay every time, and they won't have to choose between feeding the family and HRT.

The Prescription Prepayment Certificate will cost £18.70 and last for a year.

We are still waiting on details as to specifics and exactly how it will work. But this is a HUGE triumph and the result of years of fighting.

All the women and men who've stood up for this, who've spoken in Parliament, on telly or in newspapers, posted on social media or signed our petition, a big thank you! YOU made this happen.

But still a disappointing Government response!

We are so disappointed in the Government's response to the Menopause and the Workplace Report produced by the Women and Equalities Committee.

The Government has rejected five recommendations, including a consultation on amending the 2010 Equality Act to make menopause a protected characteristic, producing model menopause policies and trialling menopause leave, all of which would help to retain and support menopausal women in the workplace.

Our Chair, Mariella Frostrup, spoke on BBC Breakfast News this morning:

'This response is three and a half months late and five key points have been rejected. As MP Caroline Nokes says, it's a missed opportunity to support the millions of menopausal women in the workplace, many of whom will leave because of their symptoms.

'It seems particularly ironic given that a couple of weeks ago the Treasury was talking about policies to get people back to work. Wouldn't it be nice to keep them there in the first place?'

MODEL MENOPAUSE POLICIES - RECOMMENDATION REJECTED

The Report recommends that the Government produces model menopause policies to assist employers. This would give advice on flexible working, sick leave for menopause symptoms and provisions for education, training and building a supportive culture.

It is dismaying to learn that the Government hasn't accepted the recommendation, saying that they don't believe it is currently necessary.

Menopause Mandate expert, Cathy Hastie, HR Director and menopause advocate says: ‘A menopause policy is a vital part of providing guidance on how to manage menopause in the workplace, and the support a menopausal worker can expect.

'Many employers need guidance on how to frame a policy and what should be included, especially around reasonable adjustments.

'The Government providing model policies not only provides much needed guidance on practice, but role models the importance of having a policy in place as a bare minimum.

MAKE MENOPAUSE A PROTECTED CHARACTERISTIC - RECOMMENDATION REJECTED

The Government has rejected launching a consultation on how to amend the Equality Act 2010 to make menopause a protected characteristic. (It is currently covered under the three protected characteristics of age, sex and disability). MM argues that these don't cover enough scenarios and protect enough women.

The Government agrees that: 'Women who suffer substantial and longer-term menopausal effects should be adequately protected'. But in refusing to allow consultation into this proposed change they aren't honouring this.

Mariella Frostrup says: This is representative of the Government’s patronising and misplaced approach to menopausal women. It’s a liminal phase affecting 50 per cent of the population and surely deserves to be a protected characteristic all of its own?

MM expert Emma Hammond, employment partner at gunnercooke LLP says: 'The law presently requires women to frame their circumstances into age, sex or disability discrimination claims, which is far from satisfactory. It is extremely disappointing that the government is refusing to even entertain a consultation period, as the Committee suggests, into the question of introducing menopause as a protected characteristic.

Such a period would allow all of their concerns to be properly addressed, including by the Employment Lawyers Association, so that a properly informed decision can then be taken. Instead, we are met with a blanket refusal.

MENOPAUSE LEAVE - RECOMMENDATION REJECTED

The Committee recommends that the Government should work with a large public sector employer with a strong public profile to develop and pilot a specific ‘menopause leave’ policy and provide an evaluation of the scheme and proposals for further roll out, within 12 months of commencing the scheme.

This has also been rejected outright, which shows lack of foresight and understanding of menopause.

Mariella Frostrup says: I don’t think women are shirkers when it comes to work. Menopause leave isn’t something that they will indiscriminately embrace and take months off for no reason. For those suffering extremely debilitating symptoms, allowing some leave would seem the human thing to do.

Cathy Hastie says: For some women, menopause is so debilitating that it necessitates some time away from work. This leave needs to be treated differently from other sickness absence and protected from what can be punitive sickness absence management procedures. To deny them this protection is incredibly disappointing.

PRE-PAYMENT CERTIFICATE

It appears that the long-promised Pre-Payment Certificate for HRT, meaning that women will only have to pay a one-off, annual charge, will be implemented from April 2023.

However, some of the wording around this is rather ambiguous; ‘The intention is…’, ‘Subject to consultation with all relevant representative bodies…’.

We look forward to clarification.

Mariella Frostrup says: I embrace the fact that women aren’t going to have to decide between feeding their families and using HRT, but we’ve yet to see this change.

The mood music is that they’re going to implement it in April, but we’re unaware that they’ve consulted manufacturers, distributors and official bodies. I very much hope that it’s not going to be delayed.

Menopause Mandate expert Thorrun Govind, Chair of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society: 'We are disappointed that it is taking so long for this PPC to be introduced, and hope that it will finally happen in April.

'Given health inequalities have further widened with the pandemic and the cost of living is biting, we continue to campaign for free prescriptions for all in England.’

Tuesday October 18th.

What a day that was!

Against the backdrop of a beautiful blue-sky autumn day, the Menopause Mandate team and its amazing patrons, advocates, experts and fabulous supporters from around the country, descended on Parliament to make some noise and to keep menopause in the minds of our MPs and at the top of the media agenda.

Mariella Frostrup, Carol Vorderman, Lisa Snowdon, Penny Lancaster, Cherry Healey, Lavina Mehta, Michelle Griffith Robertson and Carolyn Harris MP all attended on this very important day - World Menopause Day - to inspire and influence anyone who might make a difference to the level of care and support offered to women in midlife.

A huge, huge, huge thank you to everyone for taking the time to come.

 Together we are definitely stronger.
